When will I be invited for screening?

When your GP informs us that you have been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, we will send you an appointment for retinal screening when we are next visiting your surgery.

What if I am already attending an eye clinic on a regular basis?

If you are attending an eye clinic for anything other than diabetic retinopathy then you will still need to attend our retinal screening service.

If you have been referred to an eye clinic for diabetic retinopathy you will not need to be screened unless you are discharged from the hospital eye service

Will I still need to go to an Optometrist?

Yes. Your optician will be carrying out a general sight test and will be checking for other eye conditions like glaucoma and cataracts. The Eye Screening check you have with the Paula Carr is funded by the government and specific to diabetic eye disease.

There are specialist Optometrists who work for the Kent Eye Screening Service for those patients for whom we are unable to obtain a good image.

What happens if I have to cancel my appointment?

It is important to let us know as soon as possible if you are unable to make your appointment, so that it can be used by someone else with diabetes.

Please be aware that we have 55,000 patients to accommodate within our appointments system. In certain circumstances we may be able to offer you an alternative date, but it would be appreciated if you could keep the original appointment.

What happens if I do not attend my appointment?

Last year 12,000 patients did not attend their appointment, this cost the Eye Screening Service £69,000. Not attending for you however, could mean the possible loss of your sight. Don't take the risk. Please attend your appointment.
