Why do I need to have my eyes screened?

Diabetes is the major cause of blindness in the working age population in the UK. It can lead to disease in the eyes which threatens vision. This is called diabetic retinopathy.

The eye screening programme aims to detect diabetic retinopathy at an early stage when treatment is most effective. You will not be aware in the early stages that your eyes are being damaged by Diabetes.

It is at this stage that preventative measures will be most effective. Our Eye Screening Service is part of the National Screening Programme for Diabetes.

The test is not designed to pick up other eye problems so you should continue to visit your own Optometrist.
