Congratulations go to two diabetes nurses from Medway, Amanda Epps and Becky Watt, who have won a prestigious national award for setting up a new forum for diabetes specialist nurses to network and share best practice. Inpatient diabetes nurses at Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham, Amanda and Becky received the Diabetes Healthcare Professional of the Year prize, along with colleagues, at the Quality in Care Diabetes awards.
Working as part of a small team alongside other diabetes specialist nurses from around the country, Amanda and Becky set up the forum on Facebook and then went on to set up a webpage, Twitter account and blogs. They have also arranged a face-to-face event and are planning a mental health study day.
The forum allows diabetes specialist nurses to network at the click of a button, share best practice and it also provides an area where members can ask for advice and support. There are weekly blog posts and social media is used to help link and support specialist nurses via the forum.
The Quality in Care Diabetes awards, partnered with pharmaceutical company Sanofi UK, recognise initiatives that improve the quality of life for people living with diabetes, as judged by the NHS, patients and industry.
Gary Fagg, Chairman of the Paula Carr Diabetes Trust, said: “On behalf of all the trustees, I would like to offer hearty congratulations to Amanda, Becky and their team of diabetes specialist nurses working on the DSN Forum. We are delighted their hard work has been recognised.”
